History of UNIWA
The United Nigeria Welfare Association (UNIWA, Birmingham, Solihull & Black Country), is the umbrella body for all Nigerian organizations and community groups across the Midlands in the United Kingdom, comprising Nigerians by birth, ancestry, descent, marriage, naturalization, or adoption in and around the Midlands.
For over four decades, as a voluntary, non-profit organization, UNIWA has served as a pillar of unity, support, and empowerment for Nigerians living, studying, and working in the region.
Recognized by the British Government, the Nigerian High Commission, and affiliated with the National Association of Nigerian Communities (NANC-UK), UNIWA continues to champion the welfare, inclusion, and socio-economic advancement of Nigerians in the Midlands.
Mission
To promote the holistic well-being of Nigerians in Birmingham, Solihull and Black Countryby facilitating access to vital resources, partnerships, and support systems. We empower individuals and families through advocacy, capacity building, inclusive representation, and programs that enable social mobility, cultural pride, and economic progress.
Vision
To be the leading catalyst for the empowerment, integration, and advancement of Nigerians in the UK, fostering inclusive growth, equity, and community prosperity for present and future generations.
Formation of UNIWA
Previously, there were two separate Associations in the Birmingham area representing the interests of Nigerians.
 The two Associations were:
- The Nigerian National Union (NNU)
- The Nigerian Welfare Association (NWA).
Who We Serve
UNIWA caters to all Nigerians—by birth, ancestry, marriage, naturalization, or adoption—regardless of age, faith, or ethnic background. We also welcome friends and partners from Nigeria who share our vision of community development and collective success.
